Dr. Mulhall answers: Both Peyronie’s disease and Dupuytren’s contracture are known as fibromatoses, condition in which there is excessive scar formation (just as keloid scars are also in this group of disorders). The literature would suggest that the incidence of Dupuytren’s contracture is higher in men with Peyronie’s disease than in the men without Peyronie’s disease. In my practice approximately 4% of men with Peyronie’s disease have Dupuytren’s contracture. Dupuytren’s contracture is a scarring of the tendon sheaths in the hand typically affecting the fourth and fifth fingers. There are some experts who believe that to get Peyronie’s disease and probably to get Dupuytren’s contracture a man needs to have a certain genetic make-up and this may be the link between the two conditions.
